CASE AGAINST DRUG USE

ALAN WELLS (Letters, 8/4) as usual promotes his drug - cannabis. I wonder
if he has ever visited a mental hopsital and checked their cannabis usage.

Then he quotes figures for use of cannabis in Perth and Holland. For
example, the EM.C.DDA 2002 report quotes Holland's adult use of cannabis at
9.8 per cent at all ages.

The same report quotes serious crime/100,000 inhabitants - Interpol 1998 -
as 15 in Japan, 44 in Sweden and 252 in Holland. Do we want this in WA?

Again (www.hun-sweden.com. Janurary 9, 2002) states that the Dutch justice
system could not handle the influx of drug smugglers, so that those with
less than 1kg of cocaine should be sent home with a subpoena and a woman
with 14kg of cocaine 9/1/02 was sent home. Does Perth want this?

This easy access to drugs through Amsterdam is a major worry to both
England and France, with the absence of custom barriers.

Remember, Holland started all these problems when it loosened its control
of cannabis.

PAT CRANLEY, Leederville.
