TWO SETS OF JUSTICE
Regarding "Greedy Drug Company Deserves Fine" (Our Opinion, May 15):
There appears to be two systems of justice in this country. Just
recently in the news, kickbacks were paid to universities by a major
bank to obtain their student loans. For this felony, both parties
said they wouldn't do it any more - and no one went to jail.
On the same day, three executives of a drug company pleaded guilty to
deliberately advertising that their drug, Oxycontin, was
non-additive. For this felony their company was fined $600 million -
paid by the shareholders - and no one went to jail.
Meanwhile, individuals who sold Oxycontin pills on the black market
got five years.
Which begs the assumption that there appears to be two sets of
justice in this country - one for the haves and one for the have-nots.
