BOND DENIED FOR 3 IN TEEN DRUG DEATH

A Wayne County judge denied bond Friday for three men convicted in 2000 for
the date-rape drug death of a 15-year-old Rockwood girl.

Last month, the Michigan Court of Appeals overturned the involuntary
manslaughter convictions of Joshua Cole, 22, of Southgate, Daniel Brayman,
22, of Trenton, and Nicholas Holtschlag, 21, of Brownstown Township. The men
also were convicted of mixing a harmful substance.

On Friday, Wayne County Circuit Judge Maggie Drake rejected arguments by
defense attorneys that Cole, Brayman and Holtschlag should be freed from
prison because they pose no danger to the community and because there are
questions about the facts in the case.

In January 1999, Samantha Reid slipped into a coma and died after she
unknowingly ingested GHB that was put in her soft drink during a party.

In March, the state Court of Appeals threw out the involuntary manslaughter
convictions. The court found that prosecutors had contradicted themselves by
arguing the manslaughter was involuntary but the poisoning was intentional.

But the court upheld the convictions on the lesser poisoning charges.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office is appealing the ruling to the state
Supreme Court.
