DRUGS ONLY OBEY ONE LAW

RE "O Cannabis," by Jason Botchford (April 27): I wanted to address the
following quote from Police Chief Julian Fantino: "I have to tell you I was
in favour provided there are very small amounts involved but having said
that, I don't think we can be doing this without addressing the business
end of marijuana - the organized crime - which is the real problem around
the drug." Drugs only obey one law - the economic law of supply and demand.
As long as there is a demand, there is going to be a supply - legal or not.
We've had nearly 80 years of marijuana prohibition. How can anyone possibly
justify that more prohibition is the solution to the problems? History has
proven that prohibition only causes more problems. To put organized crime
out of business, all the government has to do is provide a cheap, clean and
legal supply of marijuana to those who want it.
