MULL THIS OVER

IT APPEARS that Health Minister Bob Kucera is having second thoughts about
his Cannabis Control Bill and is grasping at straws to prove that he is
doing the right thing. A couple of weeks ago, it was reported in The West
Australian that a certain number of MPs had tried marijuana. Mr Kucera
claimed that this vindicated his Bill. Last weekend, The West Australian
published the results of a poll that said that 46 per cent of the
participants supported Mr Kucera's Bil, 41 per cent were against it, while
the remainder either couldn't make up their mind or did not know.

Mr Kucera claimed that because there was a 5 percentage points difference
between those for and those against his Bill, he was once again
vindicated. If he had received only 46 per cent of the votes in his
electorate he would not have been elected.

It seems that those opposed to his Bill are putting up some very convincing
arguments against it but he won't accept the facts. There are not as many
people who want softer laws on cannabis as he thought there were. Mr
Kucera, withdraw this Bill before you are embarrassed by it, others have
made the same mistake that you are making and have had to backtrack after
legislation. You can still do it before legislation.

TERRY RYAN, Thornlie.
