MAN JAILED IN OFFICER'S SLAYING

The Chesapeake policeman was serving a warrant when he was shot to death.

A Chesapeake police officer shot and killed Thursday night is
survived by his wife and three children between 2 and 14.

Jarrod Shivers, 34, an eight-year veteran of the Chesapeake Police
Department, died after being shot at a house on Redstart Avenue about
8:40 p.m., Chesapeake police said.

Ryan David Frederick, 28, was charged with first-degree murder and
use of a firearm in commission of a felony. He was being held in the
Chesapeake City Jail.

Police spokeswoman Christi Golden said Shivers was serving a
narcotics warrant at the house when Frederick opened the door and
fired at him. Shivers was struck by at least one bullet. He was taken
to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

After the shooting, detectives remained at the house until a SWAT
team arrived. Frederick was arrested at the scene. No other suspects
were found.

Golden said an account has been opened at the Bank of Hampton Roads
in Shivers' name. Donations for his family can be made under his name
or under an account named "Officer Down."
