COMMUNITY GROUP GETS NEW NAME AND LOGO

Looking to expand its reach and influence the former Fort Macleod
Crystal Meth Coalition has a new name and new logo.

The group will now be known as Standing Tall Against Alcohol, Nicotine
and Drugs, or STAAND.

The new name and logo were revealed at a barbecue Wednesday at the
community hall.

"The coalition wanted to change the name so it wasn't just about
crystal meth, but encompassed all addiction," coalition co-chair Val
Campbell explained.

The coalition asked for submissions from students at F.P. Walshe
school for the name and logo and received more than 50 entries.

The group selected the best eight and had people vote on them at the
barbecue.

Ashley Orr's design, which featured several hands holding a globe and
the phrase "Together we can make the future right," was chosen.

Orr received a video iPod from the coalition.

Riata Stav was awarded an MP3 player for her suggestion of the group's
new name.

The group recently received $3,000 in funding from the Alberta Alcohol
and Drug Abuse Commission, which Campbell said they will use to help
get the new name out.

"We're going to take the new logo and get brochures made so that when
we go to a community event we have something to give out," she said.

Campbell added they will also be having a banner made, which will
include the new logo, and said the funding will help with the costs of
presentations they do.

A recent report from the RCMP said crystal meth use is declining in
Fort Macleod, but Campbell was hesitant to say it was because of the
coalition.

"I wouldn't be so bold as to say it's because of our group, but a lot
of people are making a difference," she said. "Our purpose is to
educate people and make them aware of addictions."
