CRACK DOWN ON CRACK DEALERS
Can you believe it?
If you want crack cocaine Red Deer is the place to come for it.
According to the local Mounties, the city is flooded with the stuff.
Cpl. Brian Donnelly says counsellors in Edmonton and Calgary tell our
police here that addicts on the streets in those cities say anyone wanting
crack should come to Red Deer.
The police are targeting the dealers, not the users. Good.
And we can only hope the police have sufficient resources to combat this
scourge.
If they haven't, they need to be given whatever resources are necessary to
stamp out this plague - now.
Crack cocaine is one of the most addictive drugs on the illegal market.
According to Donnelly, smoking 99 per cent pure crack cocaine just once can
turn a person into an addict.
And the terrible tragedy is that the crack addict is not what we think of
as the usual street drug user.
They are businessmen, students and professionals, ranging in age from 16-45.
In fact, anyone in a cross section of our society.
It could be your neighbour or your child.
Crack cocaine is a stimulant. Typical signs are big mood swings, profuse
sweating, dilated pupils and a racing heart.
If a user overdoses it's possible to have a heart attack.
The drug is currently selling in Red Deer for $80 a gram. Or the dealers
sell it in points - one-tenth of a gram for $10 or half a gram for $40,
whatever the user wants.
Addiction to the drug leads to family breakdown, theft, vandalism and
general crime in order to get sufficient funds to feed the habit.
Addicted users end up losing everything; families, houses, cars and friends.
Their only thought is, where is the next hit coming from?
The police need the community's help in rooting out these scumbag dealers.
Each and every one of us need to get involved and be vigilant - especially
with our children, since the drug is already in Red Deer schools.
If you get a hint of a dealer, report it immediately to the police.
And the city itself should become more involved.
After all it's Red Deer's reputation that's on the line here, not to
mention the destruction of our kids.
The city should work with the police and initiate a massive crackdown on
the bloodsucking dealers of this stuff.
If that means forking out money, let's do it.
Soon.
