PROHIBITION INEFFECTIVE

To the Editor:

Capt. Michael P. Jennings of the Vermont State Police is absolutely right
(Pot Laws In Canada About To Ease Up, May 14): "It isn't just the weed,
it's the crime that goes with it."

So the logical thing would be full re-legalization of cannabis in order to
rid the crime associated with prohibition.

Canada, like the U.S., has tried every prohibitionist trick in the book and
still cannot even pretend that the war on drugs is successful. Indeed,
supporting prohibition leads exactly to what you have. Spending more money
on the war on drugs or tightening the border even more than what the threat
of terrorism requires is not going to ever change the damage that
prohibition creates.

The sequel, like the original prohibition, is an embarrassing part of
American history that must be laid to rest. Ending the war on cannabis
might be the other way to fight drugs more effectively.

Truthfully,

Stan White
