GOVERNMENT CAN'T AFFORD TO LEGALIZE POT
Regarding Ron Jennings' letter, Clearer heads urged in marijuana debate
(June 7).
It is true marijuana is much less dangerous than alcohol. The high marijuana
produces can be habit forming, abused and psychologically addictive -- as
can anything from overeating to
"oops-I-just-maxxed-out-my-husband's-credit-card" shopping sprees.
But the drug itself has no addictive substances. It's a safe, enjoyable high
when used in moderation. Here are three reasons why I think it will never be
fully legalized:
* You can grow it yourself, so the government wouldn't be able to tax it at
800 per cent it's value (like cigarettes.)
* People who suffer from certain forms of chronic pain will finally realize
the thousands of dollars they spend on codeine, or whatever is floating
around these days, is a complete waste of money.
* Many people would start "going to pot," and quit abusing alcohol, nicotine
and other physically addictive drugs.
