LEGAL PROFESSION WILL BENEFIT MOST FROM DRUG TESTING IN SCHOOLS

Drug testing in schools will help create jobs . . . for school officials,
drug-testing facilities and, more notably, lawyers ("Putting students to
the test," @issue, June 8).

Additional school officials and drug-testing facilities will be needed --
all creating jobs to be funded by the taxpayers. But more importantly will
be the increase in opportunity for employment in the legal profession.

Which school district will be the first in failing to dot the "i" or cross
the "t" in their administration of the drug testing? Someone's
constitutional or civil rights certainly will be violated. Then the lawyers
will arrive.

One would hope that there won't be too many school officials to go down,
and with a little luck, maybe the settlements will only be in the hundreds
of thousands of dollars rather than in the millions -- for the taxpayers' sake.
