FORMER DRUG ENFORCEMENT AGENCY CHIEF SUED

Lagos - Erstwhile Director of Investigations, National Drug Law Enforcement
Agency (NDLEA), Usman Salisu was yesterday arraigned before a Federal High
Court in Lagos for allegedly disposing of N235,000 being money recovered
from a drug suspect, Kamolideen Ademola Gbonigi.

Salisu was alleged to have in August 1995 and March 1997 while serving as
the agency's Director of Investigations in Lagos, without due authorisation
by his office disposed of the amount which was an exhibits recovered from
the suspect.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and his counsel, Rotimi Jacobs
asked the court to grant him bail.

The trial judge, Justice Gloria Okeke, granted the accused bail with one
surety who is an owner of landed property in Lagos. The surety is to submit
the original title deed to the registrar of the court.

Okeke also directed, the NDLEA to verify the address of the surety, while
the accused is to deposit his recent passport photograph with the agency,
the Chief Registrar of the court and the Ikoyi Police Station.
