RANDOM SEARCHES OF SCHOOL CHILDREN NOT RESPECTFUL OF
RIGHTS
To the editor:
The letter writers who have indicated their desire for children to be
searched by police should give their heads a shake and remember that
many Canadians died in the Second World War to prevent the world from
being taken over by totalitarianism, not so we could gradually promote
it ourselves.
I can only imagine what people would say if the Charter of Rights and
Freedoms prohibiting racial or religious discrimination did not apply
to public schools either!
If searches like these are continued to be supported by the public, we
will gradually stoop lower and lower to the level of civil liberties
that subjects of the United Kingdom have, where cameras watch your
every move and security guards are being hired to randomly frisk
school children for knives without warrant.
Those letter writers who justify that abridgement of students' rights
while hoping to keep their own should remember those immortal words of
Martin Luther King, Jr., who said, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to
justice everywhere."
