DRUGS: FORMER PERGAS MAN CHARGED

A FORMER senior official with a religious association has been accused of
abetting a man to smuggle drugs into Singapore.

If convicted, Muhamad Mohamad Ishak (right), 37, former honorary secretary
of the Singapore Islamic Scholars and Religious Teachers Association
(Pergas), faces a jail term of between five and 30 years and five strokes of
the cane.

Muhamad is said to have conspired with Hamli Mohamad Salleh, 38, on Monday
to bring in three packets, or 7.21g, of what is believed to have been
cannabis, into Singapore.

The next day, at about 7.45pm, Hamli allegedly tried to smuggle the drugs in
through Changi Airport, where he was caught.

It was not mentioned if Muhamad was with Hamli at the time.

Both men, who had the charges read to them in a district court on Thursday,
are out on bail of $60,000 each and will appear in court again on Aug 7.
