DANGEROUS AND DIVERSE GANG IN CALGARY
Members of a violent West Coast gang, with ties to notorious bikers
and organized crime, may be trying to set up shop in Calgary, sources
say.
The UN gang, based out of Abbotsford, B.C., and named after the United
Nations because of their diverse cultural membership, is known for
drug trafficking and excessive violence and have migrated to Calgary,
a police source says.
The gang first set up roots several years ago in Fraser Valley, B.C.,
and expanded throughout the province, and have a fierce and bloody
rivalry with B.C.'s Indo-Canadian gang known as the Independent Soldiers.
The RCMP say they are aware of a UN gang presence in Calgary and are
monitoring their activities, said Sgt. Patrick Webb.
Sgt. Gavin Walker of the organized crime operation centre wouldn't
confirm or deny whether the gang is in the city. "We track and monitor
any emerging organized crime group regardless of their origin," he
said.
RCMP organized crime Chief Supt. Bob Paulson investigated the UN gang
up until 2006.
"They are pretty rapidly expanding and quite violent," said Paulson,
from his Ottawa office. "We initially thought they were just a bunch
of disaffected youth, but they've really consolidated their efforts."
Paulson said the gang was in direct competition with the Hells Angels
in B.C. and fears of a turf war were raised, however, the gangs have
formed something of a partnership.
Paulson said it's not known how active the gang is.
