No DEFYing Its Worth
Young people need all the help they can get in the fight to stay drug free.
This summer, several local groups are stepping in to provide another
measure of support for kids.
The Wheeling Police Department, West Virginia Army National Guard and
O.N.E. Wheeling Weed and Seed are sponsoring Camp DEFY - Drug Education for
Youth - Aug. 3-8 in Kingwood, W.Va. The goal of the program is to produce
9-12 year olds with character, leadership and confidence who will be
equipped to live positive, healthy lives as drug-free citizens. Classroom
training, physical fitness and outdoor activities are all part of the program.
Participants will also get a little taste of military life, with
military-style food and training, as well as the chance to examine some
military equipment.
Program coordinators are seeking not only students to attend the camp, but
businesses and individuals to be sponsors and members of area safety
organizations, businesses and individuals to act as mentors for those students.
Such a worthwhile program deserves the support of all those who can give
it. We hope Camp DEFY is successful in attracting not only participants,
but help from members of a community determined to give its children
assistance they need to avoid the harmful effects of drug and alcohol abuse.
