MORE MEETINGS ON THE WAY TO COMBAT DRUG CONCERNS

Edson Has A Drug Problem.

Methamphetamine use has continued to create numerous problems in the Edson
area, including increased theft, and the issue had just recently been
brought to town council's attention.

At the regular meeting of council held July 15, councillors discussed future
strategies and possible meeting dates in an overall effort to try and
control the situation. Councillors, especially the mayor, met the problem
with shock and surprise.

"I had no idea it was such a huge concern," Mayor Gary Mahon said at an
earlier town council meeting.

Protective services meetings have been organized to discuss possible
solutions to the meth problem. More meetings are now being scheduled and a
committee could be formed.

The group discussed the problem with Corp. (Glenn) Henry at the last
protective services meeting held June 27.

"We want to organize a committee as soon as we can. There are no numbers we
have in mind but quite a few people were at the meeting and we'll be working
with agencies in town," said Coun. Carlo Klemm.

The next protective services meeting has yet to be set but there is
interest. Klemm added that many people who were unable to attend the
meetings are interested in forming a committee.

"We have to do more research and other communities in the area have done
their own research. We don't have to reinvent the wheel," said Mahon.

Mahon added that if the meetings continue next year there could be funding
through municipal grants for assistance.

By partnering with other municipalities, the program could be eligible for
funding.
