CRIMINALS NEED TO BE JAILED, NOT RECRUITED

I couldn't believe the thoughtless July 30 letter suggesting that addicts
and drug pushers be drafted into the military as a form of rehabilitation.
That would be requiring drill instructors to be policemen, doctors, lawyers
and social workers. I don't think so.

Unlike the French Foreign Legion, our military is a volunteer service of
carefully selected men and women. Imagine how effective our military would
be were it made up of a bunch of idiots who don't want to be there in the
first place. The criminal element belongs in jail not the military, and
putting them there is a function of society.
