LIKE IT OR NOT, LAW IS THE LAW
Syndicated columnist Tom Teepen does not seem to understand that mandatory
minimum sentencing is the law and has been upheld as such by the Supreme
Court. ("Judging the 'soft' judges is latest Ashcroft agenda," Wednesday.)
It is not a question of whether the America Bar Association, Supreme Court
justices or anybody else likes the law - it is still the law. Any changes
have to come from the legislature and until then, Attorney General John
Ashcroft is right to make sure that the law is upheld.
Unfortunately, we have too many instances where it is not upheld, such as
with immigration.
As for Justice Anthony Kennedy, he should be reminded that his one and only
job is to uphold American law. What other countries do is of absolutely no
interest and should have no influence on our laws.
