OFFICER INJURED DURING STRUGGLE WITH DRUG-SUSPECT MOTORIST
Special to the News Herald - An area law enforcement officer was
injured Monday morning during a traffic stop that regulted in the
arrest of an Ohlahoma man and the confiscation of suspected drugs.
Gregg County Sheriff's Deputy Tracy Freeman stopped a vehicle driven
by Terence Lipscomb, 31, of Oklahoma City, about 8 a.m. on I-20 just
west of Longview for a traffic violation.
During the stop and interview, Deputy Freeman became suspicious about
the subjects details of travel and the man's behavior. Deputy Freeman
asked for consent to search the vehicle the man was operating.
The man allowed the search of his car and Freeman located suspected
marijuana.
During the search the man reportedly fled from other deputies and
attempted to leave in his vehicle. After realizing the keys had been
removed by deputies, the subject left his car and attempted to flee in
a state trooper' s unit. However safety precautions within the car
prohibited the man from being able to leave.
During the attempt to arrest and handcuff the man, one of the officers
involved in this effort had his duty weapon removed from his holster
by the suspect. Officers were able to regain control of the handgun
and handcuff the suspect. One of the officers involved suffered a
broken hand. Afterward, the continuation of the search of the car
revealed suspected marijuana, cocaine and a handgun.
Lipscomb was charged with unlawful possession of a handgun by a felon,
taking a weapon from an officer, aggravated assault on a public
servant, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, possession with intent
to deliver cocaine and possession of marijuana.
Gregg County Justice Magistrate B.H. Jameson arraigned Lipscomb and
set bonds this afternoon.
