TREATMENT A KEY
TO THE EDITOR: According to U.S. Attorney Robert G. McCampbell (Point of
View, Aug. 20), the answer to the high crime and recidivism rate is
incarceration. He mentions not one word about treatment and rehabilitation
programs that have had high success rates in some of our prison systems
around the nation. Treatment is much more cost effective and saves
countless lives and a multitude of heartaches for many families.
We need more funding for court-mandated treatment programs. McCampbell's
"lock them up" philosophy, without rehabilitation, contributes to our
overcrowded prison system.
