ACT RESPONSIBLY

In response to a letter writer, I take exception to his allegation
that the Times-Union "targets" minorities.

Drug abuse is a treatable medical problem. However, drug abuse is
self-inflicted. In Jimmy Smith's case, he admitted it.

Smith, to his credit, made himself vulnerable when, in a public
apology, he said that he was admitting himself for treatment.

Why did the letter writer say that in most major cities athletes are
given deference? And, why just in most major cities? I was taught that
a criminal action is the responsibility of the person committing it,
no matter what locale.

Perhaps, it is a matter of perspective, but I choose to commend the
Times-Union, rather than make allegations that it is on a crusade to
blemish the records of anyone, much less a minority.

Don't hold the Times-Union responsible for the unacceptable behavior
of any human being.

I hope that Smith and all persons suffering from drug abuse enjoy a
successful recovery. It is my prayer that all are able to earn back
the respect of their families and peers.

People do not deserve a break when they absent themselves from
responsibility for their actions.
