MOVE TO BLOOD-TEST DRIVERS FOR DRUGS

The Office of Road Safety will recommend that police be given power to
demand blood samples from people they suspect of driving under the
influence of drugs.

Under the recommendation, police would do tests, including making
drivers walk a straight line, to determine if they were influenced by
drugs.

Drivers would also have a breath test. The recommendation would give
officers power, if drivers passed the test but were still suspected of
being under the influence of drugs, to take them for a blood test.

Acting Assistant Police Commissioner Steve Robbins said testing for
drugs and alcohol was different because drugs affected people
differently.
