COLLIER COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPUTY SHOOTS, WOUNDS MAN DURING DRUG RAID

NAPLES -- A Golden Gate man was shot and wounded by a Collier County
sheriff's deputy when officers entered his home to serve a drug warrant.

Edwin Mesadieu, 30, was shot once in the shoulder early Thursday, but
later left a hospital after refusing surgery, authorities said.

Cpl. Carlo Llorca, a member of the sheriff's SWAT team, shot Mesadieu
when he failed to obey orders of the deputies when they went to his
home.

"He knew it was the Sheriff's Office and he was told to do something
specific, but he didn't do it," said sheriff's spokeswoman Tina Osceola.

Investigators declined to say whether they found a weapon inside the
home. Only one shot was fired, deputies said. James Mesadieu, the
suspect's 21-year-old sibling, said his brother was "in a lot of
pain. He said they shot him like they were trying to kill him."

Drug investigators said they found some powder cocaine and crack
cocaine worth $450 and a scale inside the home.

The shooting is under investigation by the State Attorney's Office and
the sheriff's office criminal investigations division, which will
conduct its own probe into whether Llorca acted appropriately.

Mesadieu, who was released from Lee Memorial Hospital, was not under
arrest late Thursday, Osceola said. Mesadieu and his girlfriend, who
was in the house at the time, could face charges of drug possession
with intent to sell.

Llorca is now on administrative duty. Collier Sheriff Don Hunter said
in a statement that he trusts "his judgment in the use of force."
