5 OFFICERS NABBED IN STING OUT ON BOND, 2 ARE DETAINED

Men Allegedly Took Cash And Cocaine From Fake Dealers

A federal judge allowed five of the nine current or former law enforcement
officers arrested last week in an undercover FBI sting for allegedly
stealing money and fake cocaine to be released Monday on bond. Two others
were ordered detained.

All nine appeared in U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Mason's courtroom
Monday. Detention hearings for two of the men were continued until later
this week.

Mason asked the wives and parents who signed on secured bonds of $100,000
to $150,000 if they understood that their homes could be seized if the
accused officer did not comply with court orders, which included electronic
monitoring.

Mason ordered that Cook County Sheriff's Deputy Jerome Coleman, 36, of
Chicago, and Cook County Forest Preserve District Police Officer James
Turner, 58, of Chicago, each be detained as a potential danger to society.
Coleman had worked as a courtroom bailiff until he had his police powers
stripped in August due to an alleged off-duty fight he got into in which he
discharged his weapon, according to the sheriff's department.

Turner was ordered detained because prosecutors said he has seven guns at
his home, including one with an obliterated serial number. His attorney,
Francis Speh, argued that law enforcement officers tend to have guns, and
these are not loaded and include one BB gun. "There is not a basis to worry
about this man," Speh said.

Sting operations starting last April included the robbery of an undercover
agent posing as a drug dealer and four thefts from FBI cars planted to look
like they were owned by dealers.

The two whose bond hearings were delayed were CSX Railroad Officer John
Carter, 32, of Lynwood, and Cook County Forest Preserve District Police
Officer Reginal Ross, 57, of Chicago.

The five released on bond were: Cook County Sheriff's Deputy Raymond Grady,
32, of Calumet City; Anthony Brown, 33, of Richton Park, an Illinois
Department of Corrections parole agent; Malcom C. "Wire" Gougis, 35, of
Palatine, a former Seattle police detective; Jesse Kuykendoll, 42, of
Chicago, a Department of Corrections parole agent; and Marcus J. "Mac"
McFadden, 31, of Blue Island, a Robbins police officer.
