WARRANT REVEALS SHOOTING DETAILS
Fayetteville police officer Stacy Jean Swinton, who was working
undercover, bought drugs from one suspect before another man was shot
by police in a parking lot Wednesday night, court records say.
Charlie Daniel Patterson sold Swinton at least 28 grams of cocaine,
according to an arrest warrant.
Patterson, 33, of the 1100 block of Strathdon Road, is charged with
five counts of trafficking in cocaine, cocaine possession, conspiracy
and carrying a concealed weapon. Patterson had a Lorcin .380-caliber
semi-automatic handgun, the arrest report said.
Patterson is in the Cumberland County Jail under $125,000 bail. A
story Friday incorrectly said he had been released after posting bail.
Avon Antonio McEachern, 23, of the 1000 block of Vesper Lane, was
named as a conspirator with Patterson to sell drugs to Swinton,
according to an arrest warrant. He has not been charged in the case.
The shooting happened about 7 p.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of
Eckerd Drugs at Raeford Road and Bingham Drive.
Police have refused to name the officer who shot the man. Police also
have refused to disclose the name of the man who was shot.
The arrest warrant does not indicate that Swinton was the officer who
shot the suspect.
Police said the man was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. His
condition was not available Friday.
McEachern is not listed as a patient at Cape Fear Valley Medical
Center. Police Chief Tom McCarthy on Thursday cited concerns for the
officer's safety as the reason for withholding the officer's name.
McCarthy said the officer is on paid administrative leave while the
State Bureau of Investigation looks into the shooting.
Sgt. Anthony Kelly, a police spokesman, said Friday that police will
not disclose the name as long as the officer works undercover
assignments. Kelly said police have not confirmed the identity of the
man who was shot.
McCarthy was not at work Friday, a police employee said. Assistant
Chief Philip Cannady, Kelly and spokeswoman Lt. Katherine Bryant were
not available to comment Friday afternoon.
Jeanette Patterson, Patterson's wife, said the man who was shot gave
her husband a ride to the drugstore just before the shooting.
"They were acquaintances," she said.
Jeanette Patterson said her husband knows the man only by his
nickname.
