OFFICER CHARGED

BUFFAO, N.Y. - A veteran police officer was accused an a plot to
smuggle marijuana into the United States from Canada.

William Westbrook, 49, was charged Tuesday with conspiracy to possess
marijuana with intent to distribute and transporting money from the
United States to Canada for unlawful purpose.

A complaint unsealed Tuesday also accused Westbrook of lying to FBI
agents and state troopers who questioned him about his relationship
with someone else allegedly involved in the scheme. Authorities said
Westbrook and co-conspirators, who were not identified, planned in
early September to buy marijuana in Canada and bring it back into the
United States to sell. If convicted, Westbrook, who has nearly 19
years with the Buffalo Police Department, could face up to 20 years in
prison.
