COCAINE COP'S RECORD GLITTERS

Evidence at his trial

Cocaine-addicted Toronto drug cop Robert Kelly earned a batch of kudos for
bravery, initiative and intelligence during his 14-year career. Kelly's
police service record, entered into evidence at Kelly's sentencing on a
guilty plea to cocaine possession, shows numerous awards that included his
tackling a bomb suspect and acting as a drug buyer during a series of
nerve-wracking undercover buys.

Kelly, 37, who has been portrayed as an "outstanding" and dedicated cop in
testimony by North West Field Command superiors Det. Sgt. Carey Norman and
Det. Larry Cowley, asserts that he became addicted to cocaine three years
ago while working as an undercover officer and leading a bizarre double-life
as a drug dealer.

DOUBLE LIFE

During that double life, Kelly's addiction was reported to an RCMP-led
internal affairs task force by one of Kelly's informants and Kelly was
arrested in a sting. Initially charged with cocaine possession and
possession for the purposes of trafficking, Kelly pleaded guilty to
possession and the trafficking charges were withdrawn.

Kelly's lawyer, Peter Brauti, seeks a suspended sentence in the case, while
Crown Attorney John North seeks three months house arrest, three months of
overnight curfew, 100 hours of community service and probation for two
years.
