YOUTH SUMMIT FIGHTS MARIJUANA, TOP DRUG IN YORK
York Region will host a youth summit on cannabis this fall.
Marijuana is the number 1 reason for drug treatment among York Region
youth, according to Addiction Services for York Region.
Cannabis use, like alcohol use, impairs co-ordination and reaction
time, according to a York Region health and emergency medical services
committee report.
Recent studies also show cannabis use leads to increased risk of head
and neck cancer and negative effects on the respiratory and immune
systems, the report says.
The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police gave the region $3,000 for
the cost of the summit's materials and supplies. The purpose of the
summit is to increase teenagers' awareness of the health, social,
legal and political issues relating to cannabis use.
