Residents Don't Want To Draw Addicts, Dealers

I was horrified recently to see the headline on the front page of The Sun
News. A methadone clinic in Horry County? I thought this issue was put to
rest in 1998 when the plans for a clinic in Socastee were defeated. The
residents of our county made it quite clear this was not something wanted
in our area.

A methadone clinic will only attract undesirables from all surrounding
areas. Methadone is not a cure. As it is handed out free, it is only a
crutch for [heroin] addicts to lean on when their drug money has run out.

The methadone only tides them over until they can beg, steal or prostitute
themselves for more cash. Then they can return to their drug of choice -
until the money runs out again.

The clinic perpetuates a never-ending cycle.

Not only will the junkies be attracted to Horry County, but their business
associates will be, too. Drug dealers will know that there is a "need" for
their services. The clinic will be like a flashing beacon signaling them here.

The county Board of Zoning Appeals obviously knew the public would be
opposed to this clinic. Why else for all the secrecy?

I urge concerned residents of Horry County to contact their County Council
representative.

Our community must be protected from this threat.
