POLICE RESUME LAYING CHARGES FOR SIMPLE MARIJUANA POSSESSION

Hamilton Police Are Back In Business Busting People For Pot.

The federal justice department has told police to start laying simple
possession charges against people caught with pot.

"I've been instructed by the justice department that they will prosecute
all cases dated as of Oct. 7," said Detective Sergeant Rick Wills, head of
Hamilton police's vice and drug branch. Police stopped charging people for
possessing small amounts of marijuana -- less than 30 grams -- after the
law was struck down earlier this year. But that ruling was overturned
earlier this week when Ontario Court of Appeal restored the federal
narcotics law that makes possessing pot a criminal offence.
