TOKING AND DRIVING
RE SCOTT Burke's comment that marijuana has never been proven to impact
drivers or cause traffic accidents (Letters, Oct. 15): It continues to
surprise me that people from the lobby supporting this drug seem to know so
little about it. The cerebellum is the part of the brain responsible for
balance and co-ordination. When THC enters the brain it disrupts the normal
function of the cerebellum and decreases balance and co-ordination. One
would assume these are important attributes for driving a motor vehicle. In
fact, a recent study in the U.S. showed that 33 of 155 people pulled over
for reckless driving proved to be under the influence of marijuana. Mr.
Burke, if you smoke it, do us all a favour and stay off the roads. I'm sure
they deliver pizza and other munchies in Halifax.
