HEARING FOR RICHFIELD FUGITIVE POSTPONED
West Bend - A court hearing for a man who was a fugitive for 17 years
after being charged in connection with 34 pounds of marijuana found in
his Richfield home was rescheduled Monday.
A Washington County Circuit Court judge ordered Peter M. Hersh, 47, to
return to court Nov. 6.
The hearing was delayed so that similar charges against Hersh in
Maricopa County, Ariz., can be consolidated with the Wisconsin case,
District Attorney Todd Martens said.
Hersh was taken into custody Aug. 2 after being stopped by a Waukesha
County sheriff's deputy. He was arrested after the officer noticed the
license plate on Hersh's car didn't match the registered vehicle
description.
Hersh is in custody in the County Jail on $50,000 bail.
He faces one charge each of possession with intent to deliver
marijuana and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Hersh managed to evade the law even after coming into contact with
Waukesha deputies who arrested him in 1995 for resisting officers.
When he missed a court date there, another warrant for his arrest was
issued.
Hersh and his father, Frederick, then a Port Washington attorney, were
arrested in Arizona in connection with the alleged purchase of 200
pounds of marijuana from an undercover agent. Frederick Hersh was
sentenced to two years in prison and was fined $63,000.
