TRASH TRUCKS CALLED DRUG-RUNNER'S BEST FRIEND
Three Democratic politicians from Michigan could soon learn whether
the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will grant their request to
investigate the screening process for Canadian garbage trucks entering
Michigan.
In a letter sent Monday to Clark Erwin, the department's chief
internal inspector, two U.S. senators and U.S. Representative John
Dingell cited several instances in which drugs, medical waste and
other illegal cargo were found on Canadian trash trucks.
The politicians asked whether trucks are being searched carefully.
"Toronto trash trucks are a drug-runner's best friend," Mr. Dingell
said. "I've seen the scanners. You cannot tell what's in the trash
shipments. The image is a blur."
