'ADDICTION' MAY BE WRONG LABEL FOR HABITUAL BEHAVIOR

All drugs to which some individuals become addicted have been controlled and
used nonhabitually by most of those who have tried them. Even for the
seemingly most addictive drugs, the majority of persons who try them do not
progress to addiction.

The research on animals does not support the assumption that certain drugs
will inevitably lead to addiction. Thus, the term "addiction" may be a
misleading label or metaphor for habitual behavior.

A four-word philosophy, "I can't help myself," denies the very quality that
separates humans from animals.
