MAN HAULING CASH CHARGED WITH PATRIOT ACT VIOLATION
BIRMINGHAM -- A Mexican man who was hauling more than $800,000 in cash when
he was stopped while driving in Tuscaloosa County earlier this month was
indicted under a provision of the Patriot Act.
Javier Garcia-Lara, 37, was accused of attempting to evade currency
reporting laws.
Garcia-Lara was stopped while traveling on Interstate 20-59 on Oct. 9.
Authorities said $824,605 was hidden inside the vehicle he was driving.
The indictment made no mention of why the man had the money. But U.S.
Attorney Alice Martin said Wednesday authorities can use the Patriot Act to
make arrests and seize money from drug operations.
