BU ELEMENTARY CELEBRATES RED RIBBON WEEK
Students at Berne Union Elementary are celebrating Red Ribbon Week in a
special way every day this week. The overall theme for the drug awareness
week is, "Plant the Promise--For a Drug Free Future," and every day has
activities related to that theme.
Monday was Wear Red Day (students wore red in support of Red Ribbon Week),
Tuesday was Put a Cap on Drugs (students were allowed to wear hats in
school), today is Too Bright for Drugs (students are wearing bright
colors), Thursday is Team Up Against Drugs (students wear school colors or
team apparel) and Friday is My Future Looks Bright -- Drug Free (students
dress as their future career).
In preparation for this special week, students in all elementary classes
have come up with ideas to "plant" in their Secret Garden plots. Classroom
promises regarding living a healthy and drug-free lifestyle have been
placed in the plots, and Principal Steve Templin has shared these promises
on the morning announcements. Recurring themes within the classrooms have
been respect, making good choices and being body smart about alcohol and drugs.
At the school, there is a large banner with a tree and the words "We're Not
Falling for Drugs ... We Plant The Promise For A Drug-Free Future" on
display at the main entrance. Each student received a leaf to put his or
her name on, and classes have been visiting the banner each day to place
students' leaves on the tree.
