RICHLAND EX-DEPUTY GUILTY OF MISCONDUCT

He Could Get Up To 15 Years For Selling Inside Information To Drug Dealers

A former Richland County deputy - accused of taking money from drug dealers
in exchange for insider information and protection - was found guilty
Tuesday of misconduct in office.

Judge Reggie Lloyd delayed sentencing Bryan Troy Gailey, 32, but scolded
him for dishonoring the badge, a prosecutor said.

The judge sent Gailey, a deputy for four years, to the county jail until a
sentencing date is set, said prosecutor David Pascoe.

Gailey faces up to 10 years on the misconduct conviction and up to five
years on a charge of accepting extra compensation, Pascoe said.

A jury deliberated two hours and 10 minutes before finding Gailey guilty
following a two-day trial at the Richland County courthouse.

Pascoe alleged Gailey started passing information for money in January 2002
until his arrest on Feb. 7 when undercover Richland County narcotics
officers videotaped a $300 payment from a dealer with an arrest record for
drugs.

The exchanges occurred while Gailey was in uniform and on duty at a
nightclub in the St. Andrews Road area, which he patrolled, the prosecutor
said.

Gailey sold information about raids and about the times when deputies would
be patrolling the area, the Sheriff's Department said at the time.

Gailey is the fourth Richland County deputy this year arrested for on-duty
violations and fired. The charges range from misconduct to moonlighting to
paying a prostitute for sex.
