HYPING HEMP

Now that we know some farmed salmon, a good source of omega-3 fatty
acids, also contains high levels of PCBs, what's another good source
of omega-3 -- the good fats that do everything from relieve depression
to improve complexion and lubricate joints?

At the recent Canadian Health Food Association trade show in Toronto,
Ruth Shamai stood over a grill sizzling with Omega Burgers and sang
the praises of the humble seed (certified organic, grown in
Saskatchewan and Manitoba) on which she's built Ruth's Hemp Foods Inc.

Industrial hemp is related to marijuana but it's not psychoactive.
Meaning it won't get you high.

Shamai is high, instead, on hemp's nutritional value: More nutritious
that soybeans, a great source of protein, has all the essential amino
acids, and is rich in Omega 3, Omega 6 and Omega 9, as well as rare
fatty acids.

Ruth's Omega Burgers are delicious, low in saturated fat, and loaded
with organic hemp seeds, as are her energy bars, salad dressings,
tortilla chips and salsa.

Available at many health food and grocery stores across Canada,
including Loblaws.
