BACK TO PRISON

California parole policies are out of sync with the nation:

. Two out of three California parolees end up back in prison compared with
one in three nationally.

. One in five California parolees successfully complete parole; nationally,
it's four of 10.

In 2001, 126,000 inmates were released from California prisons to parole;
89,000 people on parole were sent back in.

. Upon their release from California prisons, 10 percent of inmates become
homeless; 70 to 80 percent are jobless; and 80 percent abuse drugs.

. And yet, only 6 percent of California inmates receive drug rehab and only
30 percent of those who qualify for educational and vocational programs
receive them.
