CONDITIONAL SENTENCE FOR OFFICER

A correctional officer has been given a conditional sentence with one
year probation and 50 hours of community service, for marijuana possession.

Daniel Hogan, of Langley, an employee with the Burnaby Youth Secure
Custody Centre, was charged with possession of less than three
kilograms of marijuana, for the purpose of trafficking, after police
seized 26 marijuana plants from his home on Feb. 20, 2002.

In August, Hogan had entered a plea of guilty to a lesser offence,
simple possession of marijuana.

In B.C. Provincial Court in Surrey, Hogan received a conditional
sentence.

Conditions included that Hogan is prohibited from the use of illegal
drugs, and prescription drugs unless prescribed by a doctor. He is
also not to possess any hydroponic growing equipment, unless he first
obtains an exemption for medical use of marijuana from a doctor.

Other conditions included that Hogan keep the peace and be of good
behaviour, appear before the court as required, report to his
probation officer as required and report changes of address or
occupation as required.

He must perform 50 hours of community service under the direction of a
probation officer or designate, by March 31, 2004. By the same time,
he must have completed another 30 hours of volunteer service, with a
organization approved by his probation officer.
