DON'T CRITICIZE PRINCIPAL FOR UPHOLDING STANDARDS
Re: Reality check needed in Wawota (SP, June 26). Randy Burton seems
to have all the answers to the dilemmas of weighing the right to free
speech versus the responsibilities of in-school administrators.
Staging a walkout during the school day and disrupting classes was
the apparent reason behind the suspension of Kieran King, not to
muzzle anyone's right to share an opinion.
I can imagine the field day Burton would have had if the
administrator did not oppose the student leaving the classroom for
such a purpose? Would this have been construed as supporting the use
of marijuana?
It is discouraging for educators to be admonished for doing their
job. It is also a shame that the Marijuana Party would use this boy
and this incident to further its cause.
As a group, school administrators are held to a higher ethical
standard than others. To find a colleague publicly chastised for
upholding those standards is disheartening. It is a good thing Burton
found his niche in a field other than education.
