A popular saying goes: "Money is the root of all evil." But these days that
applies more to illegal drugs than money.

Despite the ongoing "war on drugs," waged on the streets, in homes, at work
and in schools, the problem of illegal drug use continues, seemingly unabated.

The drug epidemic has left in its wake countless broken lives - from the
users themselves to their families to the victims of the crime it spawns.

As soon as law enforcement puts one dealer or user behind bars, another
steps up to take their place.

The Daily Home series Drug Wars, takes a look at the problem of illegal
drugs from all angles. It examines how the system is addressing the problem
- its successes and failures - but also looks at the problem through the
eyes of those affected - dealers, users and the people who try to help them.

Today is the first installment in the series, focusing on the statistical
breakdown of illegal drug use across the region and the implication of
those numbers for the people who live and work here.
