THEN AND NOW
Editor, Naples Daily News:
In response to Nancy C. Till's letter about Rena Collins' photo of the
1961-62 second-grade class at Lake Park Elementary.
Yes, there were 35 students; however, as a teacher then and now, I
realize that today's students are quite different.
Most of the 1961-62 children had two parents. Many of today's students
have one parent and maybe a live-in "friend." My experience is that
the partner changes every few years. 1961 students were not born with
drug-using parents that affected their behavior and learning ability.
Educators were warned and made aware that trouble students were to
arrive in school because of drugs and the new mores. Teachers teach
and listen and try to be there for their students. Students today have
an intense need to have the attention of an adult that really cares.
This takes time. Count the minutes allowed with each student and you
will see it is not enough. I am puzzled that adults do not see the
difference.
