METHADONE CLINIC HASN'T RAISED CRIME, POLICE SAY

About two months after Horry County's first methadone clinic opened its
doors near Fantasy Harbour, police report no increase in crimes in the area.

Center of Hope's directors cited widespread OxyContin addiction as proof
the controversial clinic was needed in Horry County.

Methadone is an addictive narcotic used to treat addiction to other
narcotics, such as OxyContin, morphine and heroin, much as nicotine gum and
patches are used by recovering smokers.

Last fall, county residents - particularly the parents of children who
attend a nearby school - objected to the clinic, saying it would attract
drugs and criminals to the neighborhood. The county considered shutting the
clinic down but decided to allow it to open.

Since the clinic began operations in December, Horry County police haven't
received any reports of suspicious activity in the area, according to Lt.
Jerry Sarvis.
