NDLEA LINKS DRUG TRAFFICKING TO JOBLESSNESS

Ilorin

The Kwara State Director of the National Drug and Law Enforcement Agency
(NDLEA) Mr. Soji Sodeke has identified joblessness as the cause of drug
trafficking among youths in the country.

Sodeke in his maidens media chat in Ilorin stated that unless government at
all levels rise to the perennial problem of youth unemployment, drug
offence among youths may be on the increase.

He lamented the rising wave of drug offences among youths, describing it as
awkward for graduates of four and five years without job.

"In the course of our investigation we discovered that most of our
offenders are graduates of four years who have never worked for a moment."

"We found out that most of them take to drugs out of frustration and it is
a really pitiable sight.

He hinted that the agency has stepped up various enlightening and
orientation fora at secondary and post secondary schools levels to educate
youths on the dangers in drug pushing and trafficking.

Sodeke stated that 18 people which included three women have been
prosecuted in the last one quarter.

He identified Indian Hemp as the prevalent drug in his zone and stated that
detectives of the agency are in the nooks and crannies of the state to fish
out traders and consumers of the hard drug.

He solicited the cooperation of members of the public to rid the state of
the menace of hard drug offenders.
