MORE THAN 500 POUNDS OF COCAINE FOUND ON HAITIAN FREIGHTER ON THE MIAMI RIVER
MIAMI -- Customs agents raided a freighter on the Miami River on Wednesday
and found more than 500 pounds of cocaine hidden in secret compartments in
the vessel's cargo deck, officials said.
The eight-person crew of the 161-foot Perseverance was being questioned by
agents after officials boarded the vessel and found the drugs, said Zachary
Mann, spokesman for the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection.
Agents discovered 238 packages of cocaine totaling 523 pounds. The cocaine
has a wholesale value of $4.4 million, Mann said.
The ship is registered in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and departed for
Miami from Cap-Haitien, Haiti, Mann said.
