"BOMB" TURNS OUT TO BE DRUGS

The Surete du Quebec's bomb squad was called to Umiujaq last week
after a suspicious package sent to a resident was opened at the
community's police station.

"When they opened the parcel, they found a shoebox, and inside the
shoebox was a plastic bag. The constable believed what he saw inside
there was a bomb," said Capt. George Okpik, spokesperson for the
Kativik Regional Police Force.

By mid-afternoon last Thursday, following consultation with KRPF in
Kuujjuaraapik and Kuujjuaq, police in Umijuaq were advised to leave
and lock up the police station.

The bomb squad from Surete du Quebec in Rouyn-Noranda was then called
in. Its members arrived in Umijuaq Friday morning and went directly to
the police station to examine and, if necessary, disable the device.

By 11 a.m. the SQ had determined the package was not a bomb. Instead,
they found that the package contained drugs.

Okpik said an investigation is continuing into the origin of the
package.

"This matter will be taken seriously. Our fight against organized
crime is still in effect," Okpik said.
