COPS RIP HI-TECH CORRUPT-O-METER
Toronto police are testing a new U.S. software program to weed out problem
and corrupt cops following last month's arrest of six former drug squad
officers. The hi-tech program has angered many of the force's 5,000 cops
who claim they're being over-monitored by their managers.
The program is meant to help red-flag cops who are problematic or bad
apples. They will then be summoned for interviews or become the subject of
an undercover probe.
The system, which is called IAPro, or Internal Affairs/Professional
Standards, is used by more than 65 police agencies in Canada and the U.S.
"It is a software package that will track the conduct of officers good and
bad," Insp. Kimberly Greenwood said yesterday.
COSTS TOP $200,000
Police won't reveal the cost of the program, but sources said it was more
than $200,000.
Officials said IAPro will flag cops for interviews who are habitually late,
have complaints against them or use force. Police said several teams have
been assembled to conduct sting operations on cops who are corrupt to
remove them from the force.
"This is another unacceptable level of security for officers trying to do
their jobs," said Rick McIntosh, head of the Toronto Police Association.
"We have some people who like police and some that don't."
He said front-line officers are against the system and meetings are planned
with supervisors to halt its use.
"This is a sign that somebody is not doing their job properly," McIntosh
said. "Our level of accountability is already very high."
