NH POLICE CITED FOR D.A.R.E. PROGRAM

The Minnesota D.A.R.E. Board recently recognized the New Hope Police
Department for its 15-year commitment to teaching Drug Abuse
Resistance Education (or D.A.R.E) curriculum in New Hope schools.

New Hope Police, in cooperation with School District 281, has offered
a D.A.R.E. program in New Hope's elementary and middle schools since
1989.

Six officers have taught D.A.R.E. in New Hope. New Hope's D.A.R.E.
officers have also served on both the Minnesota and national D.A.R.E.
boards.

This school year, New Hope D.A.R.E. officers Nichole Korth and John
Elder began teaching a new D.A.R.E. curriculum that incorporates the
latest science-based strategies for substance abuse prevention.

The nine-week course for fifth-graders focuses on giving students the
tools they need to make healthy choices and be in charge of their
lives. Topics include decision-making, tobacco, alcohol, marijuana,
friendship, and peer pressure. A shorter curriculum is taught to first
and third graders. Those lessons focus on personal safety, rules and
laws, and conflict resolution.
